A legally engineered atmosphere is an environment that has intentionally been shaped and formed by legal systems to influence individuals’ behavior and regulate their movements or implement a specific spatial or social order. This principle frequently overlaps with legal geography and spatial justice, where law is seen not just as a set of rules but as a factor that proactively shapes both social and physical spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laws Visibility:<\/p>\n\n\n\n


An airport is a legally engineered atmosphere where law is visible. Agamben’s concept of the state of exception\u2014 that passengers are subjected to extraordinary security checks and more without full legal recourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signs that control our behaviour: It’s more than just the signs we see stopping us from breaching it’s about how our behavior molds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laws Invisibility: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is permitted to stay on the premises and who is permitted to leave?

This is an example of Foucault’s panopticon at play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michel Foucault: Law isn’t always visible administration<\/p>\n\n\n\n


– Surveillance cameras supervise virtually every part of a mall which can shape the way customers behave at the mall without their immediate perception they are invisible yet still present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


– Behavioral Influence: Individuals behave in a different manner if they know they are
being supervised therefore shoppers are not as probable to engage in crimes such as theft or antisocial mannerisms because they feel as if they are being watched even if no cameras are in sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


– Invisible power: The legal control in the mall is not overly visible. Security personnel may not be actively stopping people, but the presence of surveillance cameras or store security creates a pervasive unseen legal atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legal geography beyond courtrooms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legal geography rekindles the idea that law is beyond courtrooms or on paper but in the spaces, we interact with daily; which is why I have used the example shopping malls and airports and its surveillance laws and how it changes people’s behavior with rules and restrictions enforced through spatial design and surveillance systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Queen v Dudley and Stephens (1884) discusses how legal geographers critique the laws
spatial blindness through this famous case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
